The Curious Nest

Tucked quietly in the Nexx building, Somme Wine Bar gives off that faintly fancy yet comfortably relaxed vibe.

It is stylish enough for a date night but still casual enough that you will not feel out of place going alone. The space actually reminds me of the restaurants and bars along Melbourne’s Yarra River, where the mood is mellow, the lights are soft, and the conversations just flow. It is also the kind of place where someone could plan a romantic proposal without it feeling over the top.

The Wine

The wine list by bottle is excellent, especially if you enjoy a good Chardonnay. There are plenty of options that show care in curation. The wines by the glass, however, are a bit limited in selection. Still, what they offer pairs well with the overall vibe of the bar and feels well thought out.

The Food

I ordered two finger foods to go with the wine, and both were simple but surprisingly good. The pumpkin blossom tempura stood out. It was seafood-stuffed pumpkin flowers, perfectly seasoned inside and crisped just right on the outside. It paired beautifully with the Chardonnay. They also served a small side of sweet potato chips, light and not oily, just right to snack on while chatting over a glass.

The Verdict

Overall, Somme is a brilliant spot for wine lovers. As an office worker, I find it the perfect place to unwind after a long day, catch up with friends, or simply sit back and enjoy a quiet drink. It is relaxed, refined, and full of charm.
